Students will have individual instruction on solos that we choose together and receive constructive and helpful feedback. Does she suddenly feel sick when a teacher requires an oral report to be delivered in a class? If so, then this class will allow them to gradually become more and more comfortable by acquiring the skills necessary for public speaking success. My goal is to instill a sense of confident communication by teaching techniques such as eye contact, poise, gesturing, vocalization, stage presence, pacing, and body language. In addition, students will learn how to research and compose effective outlines and visual aids. They will find themselves more comfortable in many situations such as teaching a Bible lesson at VBS or interviewing for a job.
We will start the year with a couple of easy, ungraded speeches and work our way to longer, more research-heavy speeches. INTRODUCTION TO FORENSIC SCIENCE WITH LAB
Teacher: Carrie Matthews
Prerequisites: None
Ages: 13+
Class Size: 6-15
Materials Fee: $50.00 (includes all lab supplies and lots of copies)
Tuition: $35.00
Payment Options: Cash, check, and Venmo (@Carrie-Matthews-21)
Supplies Needed: Please order the textbook – student edition only (https://www.masterbooks.com/intro-to-forensic-science). Can also be found at Christianbook and Amazon.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Ever wonder what it would be like to become a crime scene investigator? Get ready to unleash your inner detective and dive into the mysteries of how crimes are solved by going beyond just the textbook. High school students can have another option for their science lab requirements with this class.
The textbook provides short lessons with reading assignments and case studies, and I will provide many fun, hands-on labs and video summaries to enhance the weekly topics. Fun lab units include projects like processing evidence at the crime scene, understanding chain of custody, observing and testing physical evidence (drugs, handwriting analysis, weapons), biological evidence (blood spatter, insects, hair, DNA), fingerprints, fibers, fire/arson, cybercrime, and impressions (tires, teeth marks, toolmarks).
Although the course is written with a Christian worldview, I would recommend that parents preview the textbook because of the potential graphic nature of some of the content. The class is best suited for 10th-12th grades since there is teaching of subjects like body fluids, illegal drugs, the body farm, homicide, autopsies, and time of death. Additionally, some cases that we go over could be queasy for some; however, that said, I DO NOT like ANY blood, guts, or gore, so the cases are kept “clean and appropriate”. Feel free to contact me to look at my textbook and course materials.
HOMEWORK EXPECTATIONS: I try to do most of the work in class, however, students will be expected to read ahead and get a basic understanding of the lesson so that the labs make sense.

In this brand-new elective, high school students can have a fun break from their regular classes at the end of a long “studious” day. They can, indeed, go one more hour without screen time and socialize face-to-face! Playing tabletop games brings people together, enforces brain function, encourages problem solving and social skills, and allows us to learn new things.
Students will play a wide variety of games including strategy games, dice games, writing games, word games, card games, and even tabletop ping pong. Players will have the opportunity to share some of their favorite games and hopefully learn some new ones. COURSE DETAILS: Who’s ready for P.E.? “Everyone in your spots!” Every child should be building a foundation of an active, healthy life; one that glorifies God with the gift of their bodies. All physical education classes are designed to develop strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination through fun warm-up routines, games, and stretching. Then, each quarter two or three organized games or sports will be taught.
Soccer, tinickling, kickball, volleyball, team handball, ultimate Frisbee, Frisbee golf, golf swing, flag football, basketball, jump roping, circusing, beanbags, driveway games, badminton, cup stacking, and more are taught. Specific skills will be broken down and games and fun drills will be played to put these skills into action. One game or sport will be taught each quarter that is great for home play so that the student can organize and participate at home with family or friends. Please consider that each unit is taught over three years with emphasis given to one phase. Year One: basic skills. Year Two: team and individual strategy. Year Three: drills and play.
P.E. should be taught from a Biblical worldview too! You do not get that from rec programs, Options, or the local fitness or gymnastics center. PE classes provide many ways to teach Biblical principles as well as challenge the students to go beyond their comfort zones. Part of physically educating them is teaching them about the amazing ways God has designed our bodies to perform physically.
The thirteen and up class includes fitness curriculum from In The Core Sports Performance. This not only teaches them proper form and movement mechanics, but also teaches them how to workout on their own!
SUPPLIES NEEDED: T-shirt, sports pants or long shorts, and tennis shoes. No tights, yoga pants or v-neck tee shirts. No sandals, boots or black marking shoes.
